Early Victoria Falls Postcards

Nick Baalbergen Writes:-

Two early post cards of the Victoria Falls Regatta on the banks of the Zambezi (Spelt with an 'S' in those days!) and a view of the Victoria Falls Bridge from down in the gorge.

Both these are part of old photographic material I purchased. The surrounding material dates from about 1915 to 1920, so best guess is that the cards are from the same era. They are unfortunately stuck to the album pages, so can't see the reverse.

Anne Shaw (RhAF)Writes:-

This Rowing Regatta was the first international sporting even held in Africa held in 1910. Two international Scullers (single seat) competed and I can find their names for you if anyone is interested. Crews from Southern and Northern Rhodesia and also from South Africa competed at this Regatta.

My maternal Grandfather was a Plate-layer on the Railways at this time. Many thanks for the photos which are of interest

Nick Baalbergen (Intaf) Writes:-

Thought this follow-up information might be of interest:

A large sporting celebration was organised in June 1905, sponsored by the British South Africa Company, and perhaps originally planned as part of the official opening celebrations for the Victoria Falls Bridge (the completion of which was delayed and the official opening ceremony not held until September, although the structure of the main arch was completed in April). As part of these celebrations the Zambezi Boat Club was established and held the first Zambezi International Regatta on 12 June 1905.
The card is most likely to have been from the first event on 12 June 1905, altough the Regatta was repeated in 1907. One reference gives the date of th first Regatta 1n 1904, a year earlier.

Narrows down the date somewhat though!

Derek MacLean Writes:-

Great to see the pics of the Falls. It is not often one comes across that view from the gorge.

On examining the first pic of the restaurant my wife commented that, from the dress length and parasol of the lady on the left side she would put the date as being before the First World War - early 1900s.
