Nick Baalbergen Writes:-

This image certainly brings back the most pleasant of memories - log fires in the reception area (Major MacIlwaine seated in his customary place near the fire), crisp morning air, misty mornings and the smell of freshly baked bread from Wirley Birch's bakery across the road. I remember the luxury of under-floor heating in the 'new section'..................Ah, good memories!!

Remember Major Mac, went fishing with him on the lake at Troutbeck, we used to holiday in his river cottage, what a wonderful charachacter. My Dad Mervyn St. Quintin was big mates with his son John, they went to school together. In 98 I did a road trip around the country and pulled into a roadside shopping village near Marandalas. I knew the MacIlwanes had a farm in the area, I asked the lady there and she said yes, in fact she said John was sitting around the corner. I went and introduced myself and had quite a discussion, one of the things he spoke about was a girlfriend my father had, I suspect before WW11. I said that she was well before my time, with that he responded, well yes I suppose so!
