On pulling up the bank off the Pungwe pontoon the lower gears went missing and us 5 kids all had to pile out and push. We had to push for the rest of the holiday unless mother had parked facing downhill in Beira and push again when we had to reverse. We loved it as the Portuguese got to know us kids and bought us milkshakes - too expensive then for the baccy farmers of those days.Teazlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16740919762263201328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2492196556063118752.post-72665444373120067702010-02-27T06:35:24.736+02:002010-02-27T06:35:24.736+02:00I remember the pontoon! we used to go to Beira in ...I remember the pontoon! we used to go to Beira in the 1948? We went from Bulawayo, up to Zimbabwe Ruins at Fort Victoria and then up to Umtali, with the car breaking down, lights failing and Thank God, we had a full moon to see the road by!!! My Dad was a mechanic and used to fix the car on the side of the road. Also the pontoon (ferry!) across the Zambezi near Chobe, when we went from Livingstone into Botswana (then Bechuanaland)Rhodesia Rememberedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06644511584084003690noreply@blogger.com
